English Program at Gaïac

English Program Philosophy

We believe that in order to learn a language, students have to be exposed to and use it in a meaningful, real-world way. That means learning the language through culture, art, music and fun physical activity. The goal is for the children to become aware of, absorb and enjoy the exposure to English with out pressure to memorize and reproduce vocabulary in English.

English Program Organization

All students will participate in a daily afternoon English "circle time" where we will talk about the basics including the day of the week and the weather. We will also be counting "100 days of School" and learning fun songs, poems and listening to stories. There will be a daily calming and centering activity where students will be encouraged to become aware of their bodies, feelings, thoughts and emotions in the present moment and learn strategies to calm and focus the mind.

Additionally, the English Instructor will be in the classroom with the 6-9 year old class one afternoon a week where regular classroom activities will continue with one instructor speaking French and one speaking English; thus students will grow accustomed to hearing "real world" instruction in English. Each 6-9 year old student will participate in one afternoon of activities weekly including art, gardening, cooking, songs and stories exclusively in English.

A Friday afternoon sports program will be offered to both the 3-6 and 6-9 year old classes in English as well.

Patrici Perkins is the English teacher of Gaïac.
